Mosquito Season is Here!

There are around 40 different species of mosquitoes in Dallas County alone, so brace yourselves! We’ve had two mild winters and as the spring rains are here, mosquitoes are starting to come out. Beyond annoying itchy bites, these insects carry diseases like West Nile virus and Zika, and endanger public health. Here are a few ways to help reduce mosquitoes around your home so you can enjoy your outdoor space:

Identifying Harborage Sites:

The best defense is a good offense. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water found in clogged gutters, birdbaths, neglected pool covers, toys, and clogged garden pots. By walking your property and emptying out standing water, you’ll be doing your part to keep the mosquito population down. Mosquitoes can go from an egg to adult in just 10 to 15 days, so it’s crucial to reduce these harborage areas.

Taking Action:

Walk your property in the morning after it rains and see if there are any areas of standing water. Emptying bird baths weekly, cleaning gutters, and picking up outdoor toys will help reduce the need for insecticides. However, if you’re still having issues and looking for DIY treatment options, mosquito bait stations can highly reduce seasonal mosquito infestations and should be part of any ongoing Integrated Pest Management plan! These stations help reduce both the adult and egg population but must be replaced according to the labels.

Always be conscious of active pollinator populations when considering other types of fog or spray treatments around flowering plants as bees and butterflies are easily affected by many insecticides.
